Modalities

At The Center for the Treatment of Anxiety Disorders we individualize treatment to fit the needs of each client. We use a variety of effective interventions to treat anxiety disorders, including:

Clinical Hypnosis

People often have a misunderstanding of what hypnosis is. Hypnosis is simply a state of focused attention that is usually, but not always, accompanied by relaxation. It can be likened to imagination training, in which you are guided to use your imagination to experience changes in emotions, physical sensations, attitudes, and behaviors.

Hypnosis can help you manage apprehension, fear, worries or problematic habits. It makes it possible for you to change your thoughts, emotions, behaviors and physical reactions. Clinical Hypnosis can be a powerful adjunct to cognitive and behavior treatments. It allows you to be receptive to many different strategies that you can utilize to enhance your recovery process.

Hypnosis has been used successfully in the treatment of:

  • sleep disorders
  • smoking
  • weight loss
  • pain
  • irritable bowel syndrome
  • infertility
  • test anxiety
  • preparation for surgery
  • concentration
  • generalized anxiety
  • fear reduction

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy? (CBT)

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a type of psychotherapy which focuses on how your thoughts, beliefs and attitudes affect your feelings and behavior. It teaches you to enhance your ability to cope with life challenges and to manage your emotions. It combines cognitive therapy (examining the things you think) and behavior therapy (examining the things you do).

What is the cognitive component of CBT?

Cognitive Therapy (CT) is based on the premise that identifying and changing your thoughts will change your beliefs and behaviors. Thus, in cognitive therapy you will work to identify the thoughts that are fueling and maintaining your anxiety. This involves the individual working collaboratively with the therapist to develop skills for testing and modifying beliefs, identifying distorted thinking and changing unhelpful thoughts to more reassuring thoughts.

What is the behavioral component of CBT?

The behavioral component of CBT is based on the premise that changing your behaviors will change your beliefs and thoughts, rather than changing thought patterns to change your behavior, as in CT. For example, rather than altering your thinking by telling yourself “There’s no danger when I go out on the balcony,” you would change the behavior by actually going out on the balcony and having the experience of being safe. That experience would, in turn, help you to change your thoughts regarding the danger of heights, and resolve your fear.

Treatment typically combines both the cognitive as well as the behavioral components of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is a therapeutic approach often used for processing traumatic memories. It involves bilateral stimulation, often through eye movements, to help desensitize and reprocess disturbing memories. It is also effective for treating fears and phobias.

Imago Relationship Therapy (Marriage and Relationship Counseling)

At the Center, we also specialize in marriage counseling and couples counseling. Our approach is integrative, but is greatly informed by our training in Imago Relationship Therapy.  Imago Relationship Therapy was created by Harville Hendrix, Ph.D., and Helen LaKelly Hunt, Ph.D., to help couples and singles heal their relationships. When love relationships begin, there’s often magic and wonder. Then, before we know it, that magical feeling disappears. Disillusioned, our dreams shattered, we begin to feel angry and betrayed. We try to coerce our partners into giving us what we need. We criticize, withdraw, shame, intimidate, and cry. Some of us go on locked in this painful power struggle for years until we either break up or seek help.

Through Imago Relationship Therapy, couples can understand that conflict is actually growth trying to happen. They can stop making the same mistakes in the relationship through awareness. The emotional bond initially created by romantic love can evolve into the powerful bond that is real love. Imago Therapy creates a sacred space for healing and growth that can lead you to the relationship of your dreams. This approach to communication comes out of new understandings about the relational paradigm, and is helpful for both new couples and those who have been together for many years, as well as people in business relationships, and more.

We also work with couples whose relationships have been affected by stress and anxiety.
